Frequently Asked Questions About Your Chip Card

Q: What is different about Bankers Trust cards with a chip?

A: Bankers Trust Cards with chip-based technology feature an embedded microchip visible on the front of the card to provide enhanced security and protection against fraud.

Q: What are the benefits of a Bankers Trust card containing the chip-based technology?
A: With the chip-based technology feature, you’ll be able to make hassle-free transactions anywhere where Bankers Trust Visa® Cards are accepted, abroad or at home.  You can make purchases at a merchant location, online, over-the-phone, or by mail just as you do today.  Plus you can enjoy peace of mind if your card is lost or stolen when promptly reported.

Q: Do I still need to sign the back of my card?
A: Yes. For security purposes, you will still need to sign the back of your card.

Q: Is chip-based technology secure?
A: Yes. Bankers Trust employs a range of security measures and features that work together to create a multi-layered defense against fraud. The chip-based technology feature helps prevent the information on your card from being copied or accessed by unauthorized users when the card is used at a chip-enabled payment terminal or ATM. It achieves this additional layer of security by requiring the chip to produce a single-use code to validate the transaction — further protecting cards from unauthorized use. This process makes your chip card information more difficult to steal and therefore makes your chip card more difficult to counterfeit.  The card also contains the built-in security of regular fraud monitoring you have come to expect from Bankers Trust.

Q: How do I make purchases using my chip-technology enabled Bankers Trust card?
A: As merchants in the United States begin transitioning to chip card readers, you will notice the payment process works a little differently at these chip-enabled terminals.
  • With the chip facing up, insert the chip end of your credit card into the terminal.
  • Keep the card in the reader and follow the prompts on the terminal's screen until the transaction is complete
  • If prompted, simply sign your name, just as you do today.
  • When your transaction is complete, remember to remove your card.
Please know that you can still swipe your card at a traditional card reader for those merchant locations that haven’t transitioned yet — just as you would today.

Q: Where can I use my Bankers Trust card that contains a chip?
A: Since your Bankers Trust credit card comes with both the embedded chip and magnetic stripe payment features, you can use it anywhere Visa® cards are accepted, internationally and domestically. In fact, Europe, Asia, Canada, Mexico and South America have already embraced chip technology — so your card will be easier to use outside the U.S. Plus, chip technology is becoming the standard in the U.S.

Q: What if my card isn’t working at an unattended kiosk while abroad?
A: If the kiosk is asking you for a PIN, you may be able to select one of the following to bypass the PIN prompt: “Cancel,” “Enter” or “Continue.” If the card reader still will not accept your card without a PIN code, there may be staff in the area to assist you with using your magnetic stripe. Otherwise, local currency may be needed in this situation.

Q: What do I do if I’m asked to enter a PIN?
A: If a merchant asks about a PIN code, you can say that your card only requires a signature for verification. If the merchant card reader prompts for a PIN code, it may allow you to “Cancel” out of the prompt so you can sign. You may also be able to select “Enter” or “Continue” to bypass the PIN request.

Q: Can I still swipe my Bankers Trust card if it has the chip-based technology?
A: Yes. At merchant locations at home and abroad that have not upgraded their credit card equipment to the chip-based technology, you will still be able to swipe your card when making purchases.  If they have upgraded to the chip-based
technology, then you may be prompted to run your card as outlined under “How do I make purchases using my chip-technology enabled Bankers Trust Credit Card?”

Q: Are there any additional fees associated with my Bankers Trust card containing a chip?
A: No additional fees apply for the chip-based technology.

Q: Will cards with the chip-based technology allow others to track my location?
A: No, chip card technology is not a locator or tracking system.  The chip on the card is limited to supporting authentication of card data when you make a purchase.

Q: When will I be receiving my Bankers Trust card containing the chip-based technology?
A: Starting August 1, 2015, all new credit card accounts will automatically come with chip technology. If you are an existing account holder, most cards are being replaced with chip-technology as they expire or are damaged or lost.
