History of Bankers Trust Company
Bankers Trust Company, organized in 1917 by B. F. Kauffman, opened its doors in June of that same year with a total of 12 employees. After the close of the first day of business, there were deposits of more than $485,000 and loans of almost $500,000, indicating that responding to customer needs was to become the primary trademark of Bankers Trust Company.
Growth of the Bank was accelerated by consolidation with or purchase of assets of four Des Moines Banks:
- The Northern Trust (1924)
- Security Trust and Savings Bank (1926)
- Peoples Savings Bank (1928)
- Des Moines Bank and Trust Company (1953).
In 1933, when all the nation's banks were closed by order of the President of the United States, officers of Bankers Trust looked to the future and made arrangements with officials in Washington, D.C. to examine the company during the "bank holiday." The result was that Bankers Trust was one of the first banks in the nation to reopen when the "bank holiday" was ended.
The original location of the Bank was on the southwest corner of Fifth and Walnut. In 1920, Bank headquarters were moved to Locust Street where the building was known as the Bankers Trust Building. In 1961, the Bank expanded its main location to an adjoining building at Sixth and Locust Streets. On October 19, 1975, Bankers Trust Company participated in dedication ceremonies for the opening of its present home in Iowa's then tallest building, the 36-story Ruan Center.
